The San Diego Prevention Center is 1 of 37 Prevention Research Centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to reduce health disparities in underserved communities.The SDPRC is closely affiliated with the Institute for Behavioral and Community Health.
MISSION
The San Diego Prevention Research Center is an interdisciplinary, academic-community partnership committed to conducting research and education to reduce obesity and improve the health of Latino populations through physical activity promotion.

The SDPRC's annual conference,"Adelante y Arriba Promotores," will take place on Oct. 6th and 7th, in partnership with the Chula Vista Community Collaborative and the California Department of Public Health - California Office of Binational Border Health.

The SDPRC is proud to announce that our colleague, Carolina Huerta, was recently selected by the California statewide network of promotores, Vision y Compromiso to receive a very much deserved, Corazon of Service Award for her constant support in strengthening the essence of Promotores' work.

Congratulations to doctoral candidate, Vanessa Galaviz and the SDPRC's Healthy Borders team for receiving Casa Familiar's Abrazo's award in recognition of their efforts in researching the impact of border crossing traffic and the border crossing structure on air quality and pedestrian well being in San Ysidro.

Congratulations to the SDPRC's valued partner, the MAAC Project for receiving this year's National Council de la Raza's Affiliate Award for Advocacy for their significant contributions to policy change both statewide and at the national level. The NCLR states that, "MAAC's outstanding advocacy work serves as a model for how Latino service providers can integrate advocacy into their programs."

Muchas felicidades a doctoral candidate, Luz Garcini, for her success in the Ford Foundation Fellowship 2011 predoctoral competition. Ms. Garcini's selection for this prestigious award reflects the review panelists' judgment of her scholarly competence as well as the promise she shows for future achievement as a scholar, researcher, and teacher in an institution of higher education.

We are pleased to announce that SDPRC Director, Dr. John Elder was invited to give this year's American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) R. Tait McKenzie Memorial Lecture. This lecture recognizes an outstanding professional outside of the AAHPERD fields whose work has the potential to infuse the organization with new ideas for implementation and new directions for exploration.

The SDPRC is proud to recognize Margarita Holguin, Chula Vista Community Collaborative Director and the SDPRC's National Community Committee Representative, for her selection by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Minority Health to serve as a member of the National Steering Committee for Promotores de Salud. This Steering Committee works in collaboration with the Federal Workgroup for the Promotores initiative to provide leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of a newly established National Initiative for Promotores de Salud focused on Latino/Hispanic populations
