San Diego City College
Continuing Education Promotores Certificate Program
The San Diego Prevention Research Center partnered with San Diego City College to develop a 2-part course for Spanish-speaking community health workers (CHW's), or promotores, in San Diego. The course is being taught through Continuing Education so instruction can be bilingual, Spanish/English. This course is supported by the San Diego Promotores Education Committee (SDPEC), formed in 2010 to support education efforts for promotores throughout San Diego County and across the border in Tijuana and Tecate. Key SDPEC partners are: California Department of Health - California Office of Binational Border Health; US Mexico Border Health Commission - California Outreach Office; San Diego City College; National University; Health Initiative of the Americas; Vision y Compromiso; Chula Vista Community Collaborative, and the San Diego Prevention Research Center. This 2-part course was developed in response to the needs of the many Spanish-speaking promotores working in San Diego's communities. San Diego City College has a CHW certificate program, but it is inaccessible to most of these promotores due to barriers related to language, academic level, and inability to register for college classes. This bridge program serves as a stepping stone to the CHW certificate program.
